Why do maintenance on your office chairs?

Many factories as part of their warranty will advise you to tighten the bolts and screws on a regular basis. Looking after your chair is the same as looking after your car, for example if you drive with little to no oil in your car for an extended period of time, you can severely damage the head gasket or the pistons, and when these break, the repairs can cost a small fortune.

The moral of the story is: to get the best return out of your investment you need to service your office chair.

A good quality office chair comes with a 5-10 year warranty and with proper care and maintenance should on average last around 7- 12 years.

Here at PMP we have complied a list of tips on how to better maintain your office chairs:

Tightening of bolts and screws:

At least every 6 months, unless something is terribly wrong it should be sorted out immediately.  Once loose, the movement will cause damage to the bolt and to the frame in which it is housed. Eventually this could lead to breakages and potential injuries.

Cleaning of upholstery:

While you should vacuum your upholstered chairs and couch weekly, stain removal and overall upholstery cleaning should be done on an as-needed basis or at least seasonally. It’s very important to use the right chemicals with low foam for quick drying. As with other furniture that gets regular and heavy use, your office chair can quickly become a hotbed of germs and allergens.

How you sit on your chair

If you are swinging or sitting too far back on the chair and constantly adjusting the height, it’s much more likely to break and will be more prone to wear and tear. It’s important to remind your employees now and again to look after their chairs.

Castors or put simply chair wheels are often forgotten:

Typically, an office chair wheel gets dirty either from dirt or hairs. A dirty office chair wheel can stop the chair from moving and can damage the floor and ultimately break the wheel and damage the base. Castors should be cleaned and lubricated seasonally.

Did you find our tips useful?

Although some people will prefer to just through away an office chair because of a broken wheel or gas cylinder that needs replacement, we believe office furniture is an investment and It’s important to protect these assets by performing routine maintenance and in return have a better impact on our wallets and the environment.
